Zucker Mango date bar made with dates, nuts and oats

Are Date Bars Healthy? What to Check on the Label

Short answer: a date bar can be a good everyday snack when the label shows dates as the main sweetener, no added refined sugar, recognisable ingredients like nuts and oats, and no preservatives. Dates still contain natural sugar, so portion size matters. The label, not the front of the pack, tells you which kind of date bar you are holding.

What is a date bar?

A date bar is a snack bar where dates form the base, binding the other ingredients and providing the sweetness. Most combine dates with nuts, seeds or oats. Some brands add sugar syrups, glucose or compound chocolate on top; others keep it to dates and whole ingredients. That difference is why it is worth reading the back of the pack.

Do date bars have added sugar?

Some do, some do not. Look at the ingredient list for words such as sugar, jaggery, glucose syrup, invert syrup, honey or brown rice syrup. If dates are the only sweet ingredient, the bar has no added sugar. Our Mango, Orange and Coconut date bars list dates, almonds, cashews, ghee, pistachios, oats, a fruit powder and salt, with no refined sugar added.

Is the natural sugar in dates a concern?

Dates are naturally sweet, so a date bar is not a zero-sugar food. What dates bring along with that sweetness is fibre and the texture that holds the bar together. Treat a date bar as a snack-sized portion, one bar at a time. If you have diabetes or any medical condition, check with your doctor before adding a new food to your routine.

How much protein does a date bar have?

It depends heavily on the nuts and any added protein. Plain date-and-nut bars are often modest in protein. Our date bars contain 9g of protein per bar, coming from almonds, cashews, pistachios and oats. If protein is your main goal, a dedicated protein bar such as our Ember Protein Bar (12g per bar) will get you further.

What should you check on a date bar label?

  1. First ingredient: dates should lead the list.
  2. Sweeteners: scan for added sugar or syrups beyond dates.
  3. Fats: look for whole-food fats like nuts or ghee rather than hydrogenated vegetable fat.
  4. Protein and fibre per bar: compare per bar, not just per 100g, because bar sizes vary.
  5. Preservatives and flavours: fewer additives is usually what clean-label buyers want.
  6. Allergens: most date bars contain nuts; some contain dairy (ghee) or gluten from oats.

When is a good time to eat a date bar?

Date bars work well as a tea-time snack in place of biscuits, before a walk or yoga class, in a school or office tiffin, or while travelling. Because they are dense and filling, one bar is usually enough to tide you over between meals.

Are date bars good for kids?

Many parents choose date bars because the ingredients look like a home recipe. Check for nut allergies first, and keep it to one bar as part of a balanced day. Our date bars contain nuts and ghee (dairy).

Date bar or protein bar?

They do different jobs. A date bar is the natural, date-sweetened option for everyday energy. A protein bar is built to deliver more protein per bar, which suits gym-goers and busy professionals. We compare them in detail in Protein Bar vs Date Bar: Which Snack Should You Pick?
